Panel Tools Help

 

The Panel Tools on the left side of the map display contains five sections:


This section is used to select bird and other animal species observations to display on the map. You may filter or select observations by Animal Species, Geography, or Date.

Filter by Animals
Click on the category (e.g., Mammals) to open the species list. Click on a species species name to display and then click on the DISPLAY button.  The distribution of the species will then display on the map. 

You may select all species with a group by selecting "ALL Mammals" or "ALL Birds". You may clear a particlular animal group selection by clicking the Clear option above the animal group list. Use the RESET button to clear your all search criteria. or select another species and click on the search button. The species lists will expand or collapse by clicking on the "+" next to each category.

Filter by Geography
You may get a list of all animals for certain geographic units by using Filter by Geography. Selecting any of the available units of geography and clicking on the display button, will zoom the map to that area and return charts and data for all animals for that area.

Filter by Date:
You may get a list of all animals for months and/or years by using Filter by Date. Selecting a month, or a year, or a month and year will and clicking on the display button, willreturn information for that time period and the geographic extent of the map window.


The tabular information associated with any of the filters used above will appear in the "Charts and Data" window at the bottom of the map. The information is displayed as CHARTS (by month, by year, and by area); a SUMMARY listing of the TAXA, Common Name or Scientific name; Global and State Ranks, Oldest/Newest Sightings, and Count. You may click on the species name in the summary listing to open further information about the species in the Montana Animal Field Guide.  
You may adjust the Charts and Data window for easier viewing by clicking on the on the top of the report window and dragging the window bigger or smaller. More on Charts and Data Display...


This section is used to add bird and other animal observations to the NH TRACKER database. You must have a TRACKER User Account and be signed in to enter observations. You may add observations 1) adding a point on the map; or 2) downloading a MS Excel spreadsheet to use for multiple observations.  More on adding observations ...


The Photo Viewer section enables the display of geo-referenced photos on the map. Currently, the only photos available are from the Amphibian Inventory Survey.  More on viewing photos...


This section allows you to turn on and view various map layers. You may turn on any or all of the "Map Layers" in the list by clicking on the square check box next to the layer name. you can only display one of the "Base Map" layers at a time. Select this by clicking on the symbol to the left of the layer name.


Use these functions to search for and locate various places within Montana. You may search for locations based on its name, USGS 1:24,000 quad map name, Township/Range/Section, Montana State Plane Coordinates, or three formats for latitude/longitude.

USER TIPS:  Each of these panel sections may be expanded or collapsed by clicking on the symbol to the right of the section title.  You may expand or collapse all of the panel sections by clicking on "Expand All" or "Collapse All" located at the bottom of the panel frame on the left of the application window.
